Facial Yoga: the new Botox?

Hey your face looks great! Do you work out?

Facial yoga is taking urban environments by storm. We stairclimb, spin, and run our ways to a better body, but we neglect our most important muscles... our face. Annelise Hagen, author of The Yoga Face: Eliminate Wrinkles with the Ulimate Natural Facelife, claims these facial workouts can soften existing wrinkle lines, and prevent new ones from forming. “Through repetition and resistance, you can be proactive in the aging process,” says Hagen.

Some gyms are offering exclusive Face Yoga classes, or incorporating facial exercises into the yoga routine. Some swear by the technique but others feel it is just blatant commercialism. Be your own judge, try sample excercises at Gaiam Community and lifehack.org.

Leta Koontz, yoga instructor and creator of Fresh Face Yoga DVD, available soon, outlines how to do "Lion Face."

Lion Face

Take a slow, steady inhale of breath and constrict every muscle in your body: your toes, your buttocks, your fists — everything. On a slow, steady exhale, relax those muscles, stick out your tongue, widen your eyes and open your hands. Repeat three times. On the last repetition, try to hold the exhale position for 30 to 60 seconds to really stretch your tongue. According to Hagen, this is excellent for circulation to the face as well as a great way to release tension in the jaw — which she says tends to lead to wrinkles.
