The pace of life can leave us feeling like our heads are spinning by the end of the day. Although stress is a normal part of everyday life, prolonged stress can take a major toll on mental health and on physical wellbeing.  An important part of achieving balance and feeling your best is to take some time to unwind. Enjoy some of these relaxation techniques to better cope with stress. Every woman deals with stress in different ways, so find what works best for you!

 relax

Allow yourself to splurge once in awhile. You’ve spent so much time building up your resistance to cravings, transcending your desire for dessert. While it is essential to eat a healthy diet, it is also very important to treat yourself. Splurging on a sweet treat or a decadent dinner once in awhile can be a great way to relax and cut loose from your disciplined routine. Giving yourself the leeway to enjoy indulgences is essential to finding balance.

Try a relaxing physical activity. Break away from your daily fitness regimen and try something new, like elements signature candlelight yoga, followed up with a relaxing sauna session. If yoga isn’t your thing, try going for a walk in a local park. Bring along your favorite music or a book and you’ve got a great way to clear your head. A getaway doesn’t need to be far away, but could be as close as your own neighborhood.

Take personal time when you need it. Some people are social butterflies and enjoy the constant buzz of people around them. Others who are more introverted can find the constant hustle and bustle of people very draining. If you are one who needs sufficient “alone” time, make sure you get it! It could be lounging on the couch with a book, re-watching your favorite movie, or picking up a creative project. Finding an outlet will help you redirect your energy toward something that brings you pleasure.

Engage your brain, detach from your worries. Brain games like the daily crossword puzzle or of brain games like sudoku are not just for long airplane rides. They help keep your brain sharp, but also detach you from your other mentally taxing activities. Finishing a task, such as a crossword puzzle, can be very relaxing for some people. It allows you to focus on something other than your worries and can also help clear your mind.

Find a strategy that helps you cope with your stress. While relaxation is key to achieving balance, it is also essential to deal with the stress or anxiety you do have. One great technique to do this is to schedule “worry time” into your day. Dedicate 15 minutes (or whatever length of time you need) each day to thinking about what worries you. When the time ends, put all your stress away for the day. By containing your stress into a small part of your day, you will learn to control it, rather than let it control you.

If you want to find your balance and enjoy wellbeing, relax… you’ve earned it!
