Vacation with your friends & family shouldn’t just be about eating and shopping. While those things are fun, it always baffles me how people travel halfway across the world just to shop at stores that they have back at home. This year, more and more people are finding new, less expensive, more exciting ways to travel where getting fit is just a bi-product of all the fun they are having.
Some examples include:
Surfing Trips - Many cities now offer all inclusive surfing trips that provide hotel and meals, while you surf all day for about a week. They offer all levels of instruction, and you still get to spend your vacation by the ocean… just a little more active! Some places to try: The Dominican Republic, Panama
Bicycle tours - Biking through a city is a wonderful way to see it all first hand. When you’re in a car, you only really get to see your origin and destination, whereas on a bicycle the entire journey becomes part of the adventure. Also, you end up interacting with more people when you are out on a bike. -Some of the best cities to bike through: Amsterdam, Paris, Copenhagen, San Francisco, Boulder, Portland
Hiking - Whether you are exploring your own backyard, the French Riviera, or the lost city of Machhu Pichu, hiking is a wonderful way to experience your surroundings. When you are hiking, you can disconnect from all your worries and problems. Clear your mind, and fill it with beautiful nature.
Horseback riding - Enjoy beautiful views while getting your legs and buns tight and strong. You can climb volcanoes in Costa Rica, ride down into the rim of the Grand Canyon, or stay on a dude ranch in Wyoming. There are even African safari’s that you can do on horseback, but those are for only the SUPER experienced.
Voluntourism - Educate orphans in Tanzania, plant trees in India, protect Pandas in China, help maintain the Appalachian trail, work on a Kibbutz in Israel…. There are all kinds of free ways to travel where you get to give something back while you experience a new place in the most rewarding way.
Travel Green. Whatever your summer plans are, we all have a responsibility to protect the environment of the place you visit. Nothing is more trashy than tourists who litter a city, or put their cigarette butts out on the sand. But besides just being respectful, you can take it a step further and choose hotels that are locally run and ones that recycle. Take public transportation whenever you can. Besides reducing your carbon footprint, it’s a great way to get to know a city or town first hand.
